Decarboxylating your cannabis is the first thing you must do if you’re planning to cook with it. Despite the complicated word, this process is simple and involves applying some kind of heat to the herb in order to convert the non-psychoactive compound THCA into the high-inducing THC most people want in their edibles.
Luckily, decarboxylation is super easy to do and doesn’t require anything else other than basic tools you likely have in your kitchen. Here are three of the easiest methods you can apply in order to get cooking with your cannabis.
This way of decarbing cannabis involves an oven, a baking sheet, a Mason jar, some gloves and weed. One of the perks of decarbing your cannabis through this method is the fact that the Mason jar helps contains the smell a lot, leaving your oven/house smelling as if nothing had happened. Set your oven to 230 to 250 degrees and grind your cannabis thoroughly. Place it inside a Mason jar and close the lid. Put the Mason jar on the baking sheet and place the whole thing in the oven for about 60 minutes. As the weed cooks, carefully move the jar around so it cooks evenly.
The simplest and most common way of decarbing cannabis is to cook it in the oven. This method requires marijuana, a baking sheet and some gloves. What you should know about this method is that each oven is different, so it’s important to keep an eye on the marijuana as it cooks and to turn off the oven if it smells like it’s burning. Set the oven at 225 degrees and place your baking sheet with ground up marijuana in the middle rack. Make sure that the cannabis is spread out evenly and to place some aluminum foil on top, to ensure that it cooks completely. Let the cannabis cook for 45 minutes. Once you pull it out, it should look golden brown. Let it rest for a half hour and use as needed.
The most foolproof way to decarb cannabis is through the sous vide method. Sadly, this method is also the most elaborate and expensive. To decarb via sous vide you’ll need an immersion circulator, a container for the immersion circulator, a vacuum sealer and some cannabis. As always, grind the cannabis thoroughly. Then prepare a water bath with hot tap water. Place the immersion circulator inside to 200 degrees. In a vacuum sealer or Ziploc bag, seal the cannabis tightly and place inside. Allow to cook for 90 minutes and then let it rest for another 20.
Another method that takes a little more time but is just as effective is to use your crockpot to cook your marijuana. Place your flower in a sealed plastic bag and introduce it to some boiling water. Allow it to cook for 2-3 hours, avoiding stirring the water in order to prevent temperature fluctuations.
